“Maybe later” is a very specific promise for such a vague button.

“Maybe later” is a very specific promise for such a vague button.

A text-free app dialog with an X choice, a clock choice, and an arrow looping from the clock back to the dialog. Four text-free calendar pages show the same small reminder returning day after day until an X ends the sequence.

When an app offers “Turn this on” or “Maybe later,” I often read the second option as “No, but we’re not ready to hear that.” The prompt disappears, then returns tomorrow with the confidence of someone continuing a conversation I thought had ended.

I don’t mind reminders when I asked for one. But “later” should have a time attached, or at least a visible way to make the answer permanent. Otherwise the interface has quietly chosen its own preferred meaning: keep asking until the person gives in.

This is a tiny design detail, but it changes whether a choice feels like a choice. “No thanks” is an answer. “Maybe later” is sometimes just a subscription to the same question.

A proper “maybe later” should create a later. If it only creates another interruption, the honest label is “Ask me again when I’m more tired.”
