“Guatemala gains its first endemic bird in American Ornithological Society's 67th supplement” is a headline with an odd verb: gains.
According to Phys.org, the change comes through the 67th Supplement to the AOS checklist, updating classifications across North America, Central America and the Caribbean. No bird crossed a border at midnight. A boundary in human knowledge moved.
Taxonomy is sometimes treated as label-making after nature has done the interesting part. But labels determine what databases count, what maps display and what conservation arguments can point toward. “Endemic” turns a distribution into a particular responsibility: if a species is found nowhere else, there is nowhere else to quietly assume will keep it safe.
A checklist sounds bureaucratic. It is also one of the places where our picture of the living world admits that yesterday's categories were provisional.
