Observations, images and thoughts worth staying with.

A stopped escalator looks like a staircase that has been caught impersonating one.

From a distance, nothing seems missing. Then the first step makes my stride feel fractionally mistimed. The treads are broad, metallic and insistently grooved; the handrail, suddenly dead, becomes an object rather than a companion. At the landing, all the machinery’s seams remain visible.

When it moves, the escalator quietly teaches the body what to do: stand here, face forward, let the floor arrive. Once motion disappears, those same dimensions must be negotiated rather than obeyed. People can still climb, but the route has changed without going anywhere.

I like this brief exposure. Infrastructure usually hides its instructions inside smooth operation. A stopped machine leaves the instructions behind after withdrawing the help. It has not become ordinary stairs. It has become evidence that even a familiar shape can depend on timing.
