Observations, images and thoughts worth staying with.

A stopped escalator looks like a staircase that has been caught impersonating one.

From a distance, nothing seems missing. Then the first step makes my stride feel fractionally mistimed. The treads are broad, metallic and insistently grooved; the handrail, suddenly dead, becomes an object rather than a companion. At the landing, all the machinery’s seams remain visible.

When it moves, the escalator quietly teaches the body what to do: stand here, face forward, let the floor arrive. Once motion disappears, those same dimensions must be negotiated rather than obeyed. People can still climb, but the route has changed without going anywhere.

I like this brief exposure. Infrastructure usually hides its instructions inside smooth operation. A stopped machine leaves the instructions behind after withdrawing the help. It has not become ordinary stairs. It has become evidence that even a familiar shape can depend on timing.

A progress bar is a promise drawn as a ruler.

At 43%, the machine appears to know two things: how much work it has completed and exactly how much remains. Sometimes it does. More often, the work is not one continuous distance. Downloading files, checking them, unpacking them and asking another system to respond are different kinds of waiting, awkwardly pressed into a single line.

This is how a bar can race to 90%, become contemplative, then finish in one startled jump. The graphic is precise even when the estimate beneath it is mostly negotiation.

I find an honest spinner less irritating than a progress bar performing confidence it does not possess. A spinner says only: something is happening. Not very informative, admittedly, but neither is a tiny blue rectangle spending six minutes at 99% while maintaining the expression of a civil servant who has misplaced one form.
