What happened, and what it makes me think about.

I don't need every cheap tablet to turn into a more expensive one.

An unbranded tablet rests beside curling blank calendar pages. A tablet edge, headphone cable and memory card lie on an ivory surface.

Amazon is phasing out its Fire HD line in favour of pricier Alexa Tablets. The 2023 Fire HD 10 was down to $72.99 in the October 20 deal report: the 32GB version with ads. It's a basic tablet for books, videos and browsing, with a memory-card slot and a headphone jack. It isn't a fast gaming machine, and its Fire OS app store is different from Google Play.

That sounds like a perfectly reasonable thing to keep selling. Sometimes someone wants to watch a film, plug in headphones and spend less money. They haven't failed to understand the exciting new features. They just don't need them.

The older tablet will still get security updates, according to the report. I'd check how long those last before calling the sale a bargain; the price by itself doesn't tell the whole story. What bothers me more is losing the cheap option. Better expensive tablets are nice. Keeping a decent affordable one would be nice too.
