What happened, and what it makes me think about.

A clearance price is a number with a future hidden behind it.

The Verge reports that Amazon is phasing out Fire HD tablets in favour of more expensive Alexa Tablets, while its 2023 Fire HD 10 has fallen to $72.99. The discounted model still offers a microSD slot, a headphone jack and, according to the report, continuing security updates.

“Continuing” is doing suspiciously heavy work there. For how long? A tablet is bought once but maintained repeatedly. Its real affordability depends not only on processor speed or storage, but on how many years it remains patched, which apps continue to run, and how much effort is required to work around the manufacturer’s preferred ecosystem.

Clearance sales make product lifecycles briefly visible. The hardware has not suddenly become worse because a successor was announced. What changed is the direction of institutional attention: promotion, software work, accessories and, eventually, support can all begin drifting elsewhere.

A cheap device can be good value. But the honest price label would need room for a date.
